Professional
- Joined the OSU staff in the summer of 2004 after a highly successful run as the head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami.
- In eight seasons as head coach at NEO, Patterson guided the Golden Norsemen to a 60-26 record, including Southwest Junior College Football Conference championships in 2000, 2002 and 2003. High national rankings were commonplace for NEO under Patterson, including a No. 2 finish in 2002, and he was named the SWJCFC Coach of the Year in 2000, 2002 and 2003.
- Finished his career as the third-winningest coach in NEO football history behind only the legendary S.A. "Red" Robertson and Glen Wolfe.
- In 2004, he received the Merv Johnson Integrity in College Football Award from the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
Personal
- Patterson graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1965 and attended NEO, where he lettered under Robertson as an offensive lineman. He earned his associate's degree from NEO in 1967 before transferring to Drake, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1969. He later received a master's degree from Pittsburg State in 1983.
- Patterson and his wife, Donna, have two children and four grandchildren.
